This job was a full interior colour change on a two-level character villa in Parnell, on one of the streets that drop away from Parnell Road towards Hobson Bay. Like a lot of the older homes on this side of Parnell, the house has kept nearly all of its original detail: timber floors, tall four-panel doors, a leadlight front door with matching sidelights and fanlight, an oval leadlight skylight over the entrance hall, pressed metal wallpaper above a tongue-and-groove dado, two ornate timber fireplace surrounds and a bay of double-hung sash windows looking out over Hobson Bay. Downstairs, a lower level with polished concrete floors and four-panel doors runs off the stairwell.
The owners wanted all of the joinery brought to a single white so it would read as one piece from the front door through to the back rooms, and they wanted the work done while they were away on holiday so the house was ready to move straight back into when they got home. They also had a few minor repairs that needed sorting at the same time.
The colour chosen was Resene Alabaster, a soft warm white that sits well with timber floors and the older joinery in these Parnell villas. It was applied to all the doors, including the leadlight front door, the architraves, window joinery, both fireplace surrounds, the skirtings and the dado rail and panelling in the hallway. The finish is Resene Lustacryl, a waterborne semi-gloss enamel that gives villa joinery the sheen and hardness of a traditional enamel without the yellowing over time. Everything was prepared, primed where needed and finished in Lustacryl, with the cast iron fireplace inserts and coloured glass left untouched.
We organised a builder to take care of the minor repairs so the repairs and the painting ran as one job. The house was finished, cleaned and handed back before the owners returned from holiday. Painting every piece of joinery in the same white has pulled the interior together, so the eye now goes to the mouldings, the leadlight glass and the timber floors rather than to differences in colour between rooms. It’s a finish that suits these older Parnell homes a short walk from the Rose Gardens and Parnell village, where the original detail is the whole point of the house.
The job took two and a half weeks on site. As a guide, a full interior joinery colour change on a two-level villa like this one, covering every door, window, architrave, skirting and fireplace surround, typically comes in between $15,000 and $25,000 plus GST depending on the condition of the joinery and how much preparation it needs. For more on what drives the cost, see our interior painting cost guide.

"They finished within the timeframe they had stated, which was so important for us — as a rental property, we needed to get it back on the market as soon as possible, and Auckland City Painters were fantastic at getting the work done well and on time."

"The previous three times I can remember having the house painted, we used a different firm — and I must say, their teams weren’t as professional, competent, or diligent as the Auckland City Painters team was."
