From assessing old coatings to safely stripping failing paint and lead-based layers, we prepare your home’s surfaces for a smooth, long-lasting new finish.
Step 1 — Assessment & Lead Paint Testing: We inspect the condition of existing coatings and test for lead-based paint where needed, especially important for older villas and bungalows built before the 1970s.
Step 2 — Safe Removal & Site Containment: If lead-based paint is present, we follow strict safety and environmental procedures to contain dust and debris, protecting your family, our team, and your property.
Step 3 — Full or Partial Paint Stripping: Depending on the condition of the surface, we carry out full or partial stripping using appropriate methods, removing failing layers back to a sound, stable base.
Step 4 — Sanding & Final Surface Preparation: Once stripped, we sand and smooth the surface, filling any imperfections so it’s perfectly prepared for priming and painting to the highest standard.
Step 5 — Priming & Ready for Painting: We finish with a suitable oil based primer to seal the surface, giving your home a clean, solid foundation ready for new topcoats resulting in a long-lasting, professional paint finish.

"They finished within the timeframe they had stated, which was so important for us — as a rental property, we needed to get it back on the market as soon as possible, and Auckland City Painters were fantastic at getting the work done well and on time."

"The previous three times I can remember having the house painted, we used a different firm — and I must say, their teams weren’t as professional, competent, or diligent as the Auckland City Painters team was."

This classic bungalow on Mount Albert Road had failing coatings, rusted flashings, and delamination across most of its weatherboards, a simple recoat was never going to hold. We scaffolded the house, washed it down, then safely stripped roughly 80% of the paint back to bare timber, following certified lead-based paint removal procedures. Oil-based primer went onto all bare timber, with weatherboards in Resene Lumbersider and windows in Resene Lustacryl. The bungalow has gone from failing to fully restored.
This One Tree Hill bungalow had weatherboards delaminating to bare timber on both gable ends, with several windows in the same state. We washed down the exterior, scaffolded the gables, and stripped the affected weatherboards and windows back to bare timber before re-priming. The cedar weatherboards were restained in Resene Woodsman Charred Black, with the gable ends finished in Resene Lumbersider Quarter Rice Cake. Gable ends take the brunt of Auckland’s weather, and stripping back properly is the only way to make a repaint hold.
This weatherboard bungalow on Methuen Road in Avondale was in poor condition, with widespread delamination meaning significant preparation was needed before repainting. We scaffolded the home, washed away dirt and contaminants, then stripped paint from more than half the weatherboards where coatings had failed. All bare timber was reprimed for a sound base, with weatherboards and trims finished throughout in Resene Lumbersider. Painting over failing sections would only have brought the problem back within a couple of years.
The owners of this weatherboard and brick home on Malabar Drive, Ellerslie needed their exterior repainted on short notice ahead of listing. We rearranged our schedule to fit the vendor’s timeline, completing the job in 1.5 weeks. One wall had delaminated badly enough that it needed stripping to bare timber and re-priming before topcoating. The rest of the exterior was finished in a three-colour scheme through the Resene Sonyx and Lustacryl systems, giving this home a durable, presentation-ready finish.
The timing for repainting your house interiors depends on factors like wear and tear, damage, changing trends, and the need to brighten your space. As a general guide:

We can handle minor building repairs essential to the painting process, such as fixing cracks, replacing rotten weatherboards, and repairing damaged plaster or gib. For larger structural repairs, we can recommend trusted professionals to ensure the work is completed to a high standard before painting begins.
Our rule of thumb is however many coats are specified by the paint manufacturer is what we will apply, because by doing anything less is to void your paint warranty. Generally, this means a 3-coat system for new work and a 2-coat system for repaints.
