Davis Funerals engaged us to repaint the interior of their West Auckland branch in Henderson, on Central Park Drive near the Henderson Creek end of Lincoln Road. The job came to us off the back of the impression we left repainting their Mount Eden branch on Dominion Road. The Henderson building is a purpose-built funeral home designed by Jasmax, and it picked up a merit in the Property Council of New Zealand’s Auckland Building Awards in 1999 in the special purpose property category. It has a high-ceilinged chapel, a tiled foyer, reception and lounge, family arrangement rooms and a large reception lounge for gatherings after a service. The chapel has exposed timber trusses and a sarked timber ceiling around eight metres up, clerestory windows, a round stained glass window over the entrance and a full-height glazed timber screen between the chapel and the foyer.
This is a working funeral home, so the timing had to fit around services. There was no option to close the building for a fortnight and work through it room by room. An award-winning building deserves a tidy finish, and the walls needed a hard-wearing one for a building that sees a lot of foot traffic, the timber doors throughout needed re-varnishing, and there were a few building repairs to sort before painting could go ahead.
The walls in the chapel, foyer, reception, arrangement rooms and reception lounge were painted in Resene SpaceCote, chosen for its durability and scrub resistance in a commercial building that is cleaned often. The timber doors were sanded back and re-varnished in Resene Qristal Clear polyurethane so they match the timber joinery and the exposed trusses overhead. We recommended the builder we work with for the repairs, so the building work and the painting ran as one job rather than the client having to manage two trades.
The height of the chapel was the main practical challenge. Eight metres of wall above rows of fixed pews needs a scissor lift, but the lift also had to fit through the doorways and be light enough not to crack the tiled floor in the foyer. We sourced a machine the right size for the building, and moved and reinstated the pews, lounge furniture and display cabinets ourselves as each area was done. Work was scheduled around funeral bookings so services carried on as normal, and the whole interior was finished in under two and a half weeks.
As a guide, a commercial interior repaint on this scale, with high ceilings, lift hire and work scheduled around a business that stays open, typically comes in between $25,000 and $45,000 plus GST depending on floor area, ceiling height and how much repair and varnish work is involved. For more on what drives the cost, see our interior painting cost guide.
If you run a commercial premises in Henderson or wider West Auckland and need it repainted without closing, we’re happy to come and have a look. "The previous three times I can remember having the house painted, we used a different firm — and I must say, their teams weren’t as professional, competent, or diligent as the Auckland City Painters team was."
